In The Pines
In The Pines is my three-track reimagining of two traditional songs, “In the Pines” and “The Longest Train." Each version takes my new father-and-son tragedy in a radically different direction: from a gothic folk murder ballad, to a bluesy duet, and then a cinematic excursion.

“One day in 2025, a friend DMed, excited about a male vocal persona he’d created. I loved that deep voice, too. He told me what he wanted to do with it: update a traditional song, along the same lines as one of his favorite performances by Nirvana. Though I’d never even heard that Cobain track, I eagerly asked, “Hey. Can I please take a crack at it?” Over the next two nights, I went back to the song’s roots. I did some research and discovered its origins in TWO old Appalachian folk songs from the 19th century: “In the Pines” and “The Longest Train.” And so I adapted both of those sources into one new composition of my own. I revised their lyrics, wrote additional lines, and completely changed the chronology, beginning with the ending. Then I used v4 to create three different versions of my work. Only after I’d finished did I finally listen to Nirvana’s rendition. I actually think it helped that I hadn’t heard it: my versions sound nothing like theirs. I handed the second track back to my friend and asked if he wanted to finish it. (I felt it still needed a male-female call-and-response in the bridge to work.) He tried mightily, yet couldn’t get it to happen in v4. Then, via v5, I did. I later upgraded the other two versions, too.”

This certain distinct weaving of song structure & voice is both raw & delicate
